The Oddities Armoire project is all about exploring tension: in materials, wood and steel, dimensions, softness and hardness, between masculine and feminine forms, smoothness and roughness, romanticism and classicism. The exploration between what was already there – crafted by others more than a century ago – and contemporary design.
The investigation was to see how antique pieces, such as a French marriage armoire door (ca. 1800), antique hinges, brass door handles and pieces of a French Aubusson tapestry, could be paired best with metalwork techniques.
We were looking for a contrast to get the piece in balance, using the antique items in a refreshing way and incorporating graphic elements as well.
